The Shiba Inu is a big dog in a small body! This proud breed goes all the way back to the Joumon period in Japan (before 300 B.C.). In Japan, this breed reigns supreme as the most popular dog - with more than 1 million registered, and is quickly finding it's way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers world-wide. The Shiba Inu is an ancient breed that is considered the smallest and oldest of Japan's canines. It originated in that country's mountainous regions and was first used to hunt large game, though it is currently used for small-game hunting. This diminutive Spitz breed is considered the most popular companion dog in its native land. The name means 'small dog' in Japanese.
